AuNPs and colored latex beads are widely used for applications requiring moderate analytical sensitivity. When higher sensitivity is needed, developers increasingly turn to fluorescent latex beads, or to luminescent particles — a high-investment solution that achieves very high sensitivity. However, regardless of the conjugation method employed — passive adsorption or covalent coupling — these approaches present inherent trade-offs that compromise assay performance. Most critically, non-specific binding (NSB), especially prevalent with fluorescent and luminescent particles, increases false positive rates, potentially disqualifying tests from commercialization and patient use.
